![]() Such questions often begin with 'did you?' or 'were you?' For example: “Why do you feel this way?” Closed QuestionsĬlosed questions usually elicit a 'yes' or 'no' response and do not encourage speakers to be open and expand on their thoughts. “When did you first start feeling like this?” These questions encourage speakers to be open and expand on their thoughts. If your role is to assist a speaker to talk about an issue, often the most effective questioning starts with 'when', 'where', 'how' or 'why'. The best questions are open-ended as they give the speaker choice in how to respond, whereas closed questions allow only very limited responses. When you are the listener in a sensitive environment, the right sort of non-directive questioning can enable the speaker to describe their viewpoint more fully.Īsking the right question at the right time can be crucial and comes with practice. Clarifying involves genuineness on the listener's part and it shows speakers that the listener is interested in them and in what they have to say. Clarifying helps you to sort these out and also to check the speaker's priorities. ![]()
![]() The series went on to spawn four sequels across multiple platforms, but faded out during the mid-2000s as other fighters seized the market. One of these forgotten gems was Bloody Roar, which injected its gameplay with the unique element of beastly transformations. The modern fighting game scene is ruled by the likes of household brands like Tekken, Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, but back on the PS1, several emerging fighters were battling for the spotlight. Given the highly original style, it would certainly make for a refreshing RPG today. Where is it now? Like Parasite Eve, the final nail in the coffin for Wild Arms was a PSP release called Wild Arms XF, which got a very mixed reception. The merger of these unlikely genres is what gave the series longevity – enough to earn four sequels all the way into the PS2 era. Since most RPGs swayed towards the medieval fantasy aesthetic, Wild Arms was the first that dared to break tradition by taking us to the wild west. PlayStation is currently sitting on a goldmine with Wild Arms, an RPG series that received plenty of attention when it released on PS1. The IP is currently owned by Square Enix, who seem to already have their hands full with developing other remakes like Final Fantasy VII for the time being. There have been some rumours about a potential revival or remake of the original PS1 classic, but it remains to be seen whether or not the companies will actually play ball. While it managed to gain enough success to warrant an arguably better sequel in Parasite Eve II, Square Enix and PlayStation haven’t revisited the series since its lesser known PSP sequel, The 3rd Birthday, back in 2010. In 1998, Square Enix released their acclaimed role-playing horror game Parasite Eve, which was undoubtedly unique for its time. READ MORE Bloodborne PSX Fan-Made Demake Now Available for Free on PC Parasite Eve While we’ll only be talking about five classic titles that are in need of a revival, we’ve also got a few honourable mentions in the form of Vagrant Story, the critically acclaimed RPG from Square Enix which only received one entry in 2000, and Destruction Derby, the vehicular combat racing game from Psygnosis which fizzled out after its glory days on the PS1. However, there remains a few (almost) forgotten classics that PlayStation should revive. Sony’s first console saw franchises like Gran Turismo, Crash Bandicoot, Wipeout, Tomb Raider and several others take off. The PS1 library contains some of the most nostalgic video games ever made, depending on who you ask. What Has deemed fantastic and blatantly surreal, then, were not merely the first Gothic-novel episodes of the book, but the whole setup built around Alphonse. It seems that Has, fascinated and perplexed by the utterly surreal character of van Worden’s adventures, saw the opportunity to make a movie that casts doubt precisely on the explanations given to poor Alphonse at the end of the novel. This is precisely where Wojciech Has takes up the story. Indeed, only someone as naïve and simple-minded as Alphonse van Worden, protagonist of book and film, can be the unwitting pawn of as enormous an intrigue as he is and not suffer persecution mania for the rest of his life. But the book can also be read as a huge novel on paranoia. Potocki thus wrote a novel about an enlightened world emptied of its magic. The message of the Manuscript, then, as Rosset and Triaire put it, would be that “all roads are good, as they all allow us to reach the goal the problem is that, in the meantime, the goal has been emptied of its substance.” 3 Except when the main characters, summoned by the Great Sheikh, go down to the bottom of the mine, what they find out is that the gold vein, which for a thousand years had been exploited and seemed inexhaustible, is finally worn down. 2 But where do all the stories, where do all the historical, religious, philosophical and scientific disquisitions usher? At the end of Potocki’s book, all roads lead to the underworld kingdom of Sheikh Gomelez. ![]() Together with a huge sample of human types (from noblemen to merchants, bandits, gypsies, moors, cabalists, inquisitors, men of science, rascals, jealous husbands or libidinous women, to name but a few) and their respective worldviews, the book deploys a near-full spectrum not only of literary genres, but also of kinds of discourse, all of which parade on an equal footing. Thus, as in any Enlightenment novel worth its salt, old dogmas are scorned and derided, untested certainties and beliefs are brought to trial, and authority figures like fathers and priests are made into fools. A case in point is Toledo’s highly unlikely series of coincidences (which Has takes up in his feature): a presumed voice from the afterlife is finally revealed as no more than the voice of a guy who mistakenly knocked at your window the very same night your best friend was dueling and had promised to tell you about the after-world should he die (which he did). But, as stories unfold and ever more points of view join the scene, what had looked like the product of supernatural powers progressively finds a totally natural explanation in terms of human agents (and a good dose of chance, too). ![]() It begins in a world in which everything seems to be the work of mythical forces such as demons, evil spirits and enchantments. In Chojecki’s as well as in Potocki’s versions, the novel is a voyage of initiation of its main character, or rather a Bildungsroman, the coming-of-age story of the man of the Enlightenment. (By the way: René Radrizzani had to struggle with Chojecki’s version in order to arrive at the first complete French version, which had to wait until 1989 - at some points he, Radrizzani, was so baffled that he gave up and translated straight from Polish - while Radrizzani’s version in turn served as the original for all subsequent translations, e.g. ![]() The result was a cut and paste carnage of fragments that hardly fit together, or a masterpiece of intertextuality. ![]() Except that, of course, Chojecki’s translation was not really the translation of one single work, but a potpourri or chimera consisting of a rather arbitrary assemblage of those of Potocki’s manuscripts Chojecki could get his hands on. At the time Has shot his film, 1964, the only “full version” of the novel that existed was the 1847 Polish translation by Edmund Chojecki. None of the novel’s auto-graphic versions, however, could have served as the basis for Has’ film, since they were only unearthed in 2002, when two Potocki scholars, François Rosset and Dominique Triaire, subjected all of the known surviving materials to close scrutiny. Notably, there are three cuts of the film and, so far, three known versions of the novel. T he Manuscript Found in Saragossa, the French-written book by count Jan Potocki and the eponymous adaptation by Wojciech J. ![]() Zombie gives a better synopsis of the film than we’ve previously had: The real truth is that Zombie’s Halloween films are simply bad movies, and that’s why people don’t like them.Īnd Lords of Salem, his next film? He’s been gestating it for years now - it was actually a movie idea before he turned it into a song. Of course if it had been far removed but GOOD, we wouldn’t be having this discussion. He made Michael Myers fairly unrecognizable in Halloween II, and it felt so far removed from what had been established as a Halloween film that it made you wonder why bother throwing that name on it. But at the same time, he’s not getting the point of a franchise, which is to revisit characters and situations. There’s an auteur thing going on which I respect. I hate both of his Halloween films, but I hate the sequel marginally less because it at least feels like a movie Rob Zombie would make. If it’s too similar to the original, everybody wonders what the point was, but if it’s too different, everybody complains that it’s… too different! I found especially with Halloween II that everyone talked about what it wasn’t and not what it was: ‘you can’t do that with Michael Myers you can’t do that with Loomis…’ It’s like people have a set of rules in their minds about how these things should function, and you can’t work like that.
